when i began painting as an undergraduate, the canvases were large and stretched. the majority of the paintings were acrylic. not the nice expensive, brilliant paint, the 78 cent craft paint. i worked primarily with the cheapest paint possible as i could work fast and the layers were easy to grind and sand away, leaving a fine impression of what was there at one time. i focused on the process of creating histories within a painting. i would leave holes, sand away layers, dig and scratch into the canvas with nails and razors. the physicality and the intimacy of creating something bigger than myself was very emotional and draining. by creating these paintings, i wanted to show the audience the vulnerability of not only myself but the painting which had so many lives hidden under the layers. like us, all art has their own dirty little secrets, you just have to look.
