We have invited five Sioux City artists to display works this month
and next to show their fine arts skills of drawing, painting,
studies, graphic art and relate it to their daily job as a body
artist.
According to Hoag Levins in The Changing Cultural Status of the
Tattoo Arts in America, “Once a taboo practice largely confined to
sailors and street hoodlums, tattooing has evolved into a highly
prized fashion product for celebrities and millions of middle-class
consumers. Tattooing is recognized by government agencies as both an
art form and a profession and tattoo-related art work is the subject
of museum, gallery and educational institution art shows across the
United States.”
Kim Strohbeen, exhibit manager and a member of the Le Mars Arts
Council Board of Directors, chose these artists for the quality of
their work and their craftsmanship. She invited, from Sioux City,
George Owings, Tim McKenny, Rob Hill, Richard Jenkins, and Emily
Evans to exhibit their pieces and studies.
Owings likes bright vibrant colors and old school tattoos.
Evans is an elementary art teacher in Sioux City doing apprentice
work with Owings; Jenkins (also known as Richie Vomit) is also a
filmmaker and musician. Hill now does precision free hand body
piercing and three types of branding; and McKinney calls himself an
art dork, multimedia artist and textile designer.
