The 153rd Annual Traveling Exhibition of the American Watercolor Society (AWS) will be on display June 12-July 31, 2020 in the galleries of the Le Mars Arts Center, located in downtown Le Mars, Iowa.
Revered as one of the most prestigious art societies in the world, AWS members have included renowned artists such as Edward Hopper, Andrew Wyeth and Charles Burchfield.
This highly anticipated exhibition includes forty paintings selected from over 1,000 submissions by artists around the world. While inclusion in the exhibition is itself an honor, participants also competed for nearly $45,000 in awards and prizes. This year’s Gold Medal of Honor winner and recipient of the $4,000 prize was John Jude Palencar for his painting “The Dark Line”.
The Le Mars Arts Center has been a cultural hub in the vibrant community of Le Mars since 1976. The Le Mars Arts Center will host the exhibit’s first public appearance, after the showing in New York City was unable to open due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Le Mars Arts Council President Nancy Thoma helped bring the exhibit to Le Mars and stated, "We are honored the AWS selected us to present these extraordinary paintings to our community. Thanks to our supporters' generous donations and matching funds from the Gilchrist Foundation, we have been able to prepare the Arts Center with upgrades that will truly showcase this amazing exhibit."
Funding from the Le Mars Convention and Visitors Bureau allows the Arts Center to provide free admission to the exhibit.
